Hsis English - After Phonics: Developing Readers (2 Part Course)

Creating fluent decoders and habitual readers

Outline

A two-part project including an action research gap task. The project will focus on the important stage at the end of KS1 and the beginning of KS2 when most children are moving from phonically regular texts to more sophisticated books. This is a crucial stage which will have a major impact on whether a child will become an habitual reader.
The project is intended for teachers of Y2 and Y3 and will focus specifically on two aspects:
Reading aloud with fluency and expression
Enabling pupils to explore the world of books and developing the reading habit.

During the second meeting of the two-part project, teachers will report back on the impact of the approaches that they have put in place and share the findings of their action research.

The action research will involve the following:
Videoing or recording readers
Developing and trialling interventions and whole class teaching approaches
Evaluating impact of interventions and approaches

Description

  • Teachers will explore the role of shared reading, guided reading and reading aloud
  • We will look at how teachers can encourage and monitor independent reading (including increasing fluency of decoding)
  • Delegates will devise a reading curriculum incorporating the approaches most likely to create habitual readers.
